Previous Events

Over the past 25 years we have been meeting regularly forming an ever-developing network of friends out of the Imperial family.

Here are some highlights from those gatherings.

25 Years of Imperial College Club of Germany

If the 25th Anniversary Imperial College Club of Germany’s event is anything to go by, then the next 25 years will be awesome!

What a cocktail of a weekend!

Kicking-off on Friday in the gorgeous 58 Princes Gate at Imperial College London with the Provost Ian Walmsley and his Excellency The German Ambassador Miguel Berger, German Embassy London, on Imperial College‘s future mission and the re-aligning of British German relationships thanks to Horizon.

Then a crystal clear message from the world-famous climatologist Dr Fredi Otto, Grantham Institute, head of the Weather Attribution Centre, „Stop burning fossil fuels now if you want to reduce the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events!“

Saturday gave us a fascinating insight into how the sun‘s activity affects earth by former director of the European Space Agency, Professor David Southwood, followed by Professor Declan O’Regan’s talk about his research on how he can predict the heart‘s age with the help of AI and what genes/lifestyle will help us or kill us (keep your visceral fats low if you want to live, folks!)

Prof Southwood then took us to Imperial College‘s new site at White City where industry and academia will mix and set the cutting edge for all sorts of inter-departmental topics (engineering-health-sustainability-climate-space), and culminated in sipping cocktails on an exclusive balcony in the Oxo Tower overlooking the whole of London!

We wrapped up this inspiring weekend on Sunday with a vibrant walking tour of Brick Lane Street Art admiring Banksey, Jimmy C, Zabou, etc. The sheer amount of creativity and energy was invigorating!

The Annual Meeting of ICCG e.V. took place on 13th Sept 2008 in the beautiful wine city of Heidelberg.

Appropriately Mr Dariusch Khanzadeh, Siemens AG , Department of Strategic Tasks, Business and Planning talked to us about the current economic crisis. If you thought relativity was a strange concept, you should have seen the models used in finance centred around the Sub-primes! And rightly, he prophesised that it’s going to get a lot worse before it gets better! We moved on to IT frameworks that ensure competitiveness in the future with a lecture by Mr Niklaus Weissenstein from Accenture. Its good to keep in touch with these high-flying IT kids… their world is moving so fast! Even if you can speak English, this proved that the language has evolved into another technical dimension. After our official AGM, we struck out to the Weingut Clauer for the local Weinfest and plenty of local wine to taste. Mr Clauer junior took us personally on a tour of his vineyard and cellars emphasising the need in Germany to innovate with Bio Wines to keep abreast of the market.

The next day, our Club was taken on a guided walk through the Heidelberger Schloss which rounded up an excellent Networking event!

2005 Dresden

In a series of lectures, we learnt from Siemens Dresden whether the East German economy is on track, we understood the technology observing Tsunamis thanks to the Potsdamer GFZ  plus a discourse in Work-Life Balance with a personal trainer. The tour of the city included as highlights a guided tour of the reconstructed “Frauenkirche”, a magnificent tour of the Dresden’s cultural heritage sites and its history, and a visit to Volkswagen’s “Gläserne Manufaktur” (the transparent factory, birthplace of the VW luxury car ‘Phaeton’).  Afterwards the Alumni enjoyed each other’s company in informal networking during evening meal and at the alternative street festival Bunte Republik Neustadt until deep into the night!
